Lots of fun was had in Year 2 during the afternoon of Friday 10th May when we celebrated the Madrid fiesta of San Isidro, as part of our Local History studies.
The children all became ‘chulapos’ and ‘chulapas’ in their headscarves and caps and with their red carnations.
They first had a special assembly where they found out lots of interesting facts about San Isidro and how the fiesta is celebrated on the 15th May in the centre of Madrid.
Then we learnt how to dance the chotis, with Mrs Kenny putting the children through their paces!
After that everyone had the chance to practise dancing the chotis in the playground. Miss Lawrence provided the music on her violin!
The celebrations ended with a special picnic where the children sampled the typical fiesta treats of rosquillas and barquillos and drank special spring water for good luck and good health.
We do hope the children have been able to share some if their new knowledge about the fiesta with you – and do please let us know if you take part in any of the special celebrations taking place in Madrid this week.
