The Runnymede DoE International Award Team is fully trained to deliver the DoE International Award and will take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of participants in DoE activities. However, an important part of the DoE International Award Programme is that participants undertake these activities independently of staff supervision in order to build resilience, teamwork, independent learning and problem-solving skills. In particular, participant groups are expected to be self-reliant during DoE expeditions as the programme allows only minimal staff intervention during these. There are certain risks that are integral to activities including hiking in rugged and unfamiliar terrain, kayaking and other water sports, cooking on camping stoves and camping in poor weather conditions.
