The United States has attracted more pupils than ever, with pupils starting their higher education at Columbia, Stanford, NYU, UPenn and Cornell, amongst other excellent colleges.

We are seeking to appoint a qualified Head of Pre-Prep to lead this section of the school after the retirement of the current Headmistress in March 2025. This allows for a smooth and supported transition period into the role. The successful candidate will manage a team of teachers and assistants across Pre Nursery, Nursery, Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3. The purpose of the role is to provide a safe, secure and well-organised environment that enables children to thrive as independent learners and engaged, considerate members of the school community. Main responsibilities/duties

Leadership and Strategy

  • Responsible for the day to day internal management, organisation, operation and administration of the Pre Prep School
  • Manage the organisation, assessment and administration of the curriculum in conjunction with Pre-Prep Deputy Head(s)
  • Member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) with particular responsibility for the Pre-Prep
  • Contribute to devising appropriate strategies to develop the school and support their successful implementation
  • Responsible for preparing pupils for a smooth transition into the prep school
  • Designated Safeguarding Lead for the Pre Prep
  • Manage the EYFS and Key Stage 1
  • Attend weekly meetings with the Headmaster of the Prep School
  • Draw up a duty rota for the Pre-Prep and carry out a reasonable share of those duties
  • Liaise, as appropriate, with other members of the Prep School staff, e.g. Senior Management Team, Heads of Department, and support staff
  • Delegate as necessary to ensure that the Pre-Prep fulfils the requirements of the whole school policies
  • Ensure Pre Prep policies are updated and compliant with regulations
  • Manage/ deliver a programme of inset days, staff meetings and pastoral meetings as required
  • Organise appropriate cover within Pre Prep in the event of illness/absence
  • Monitor and oversee the ordering, maintaining and updating of resources within the Pre Prep

  • Meet with the Powell family often, and write a termly report for them
  • Provide written reports for parents at regular intervals as directed by the Prep School Headmaster

  • Organise educational and recreational outings and visits from speakers
  • Organise Pre-Prep events such as the Pre-Prep plays, Sporting events, Summer Fair, Summer Camps

Teaching and Learning

  • Lead and manage the development of the Pre-Prep curriculum and ensure that continuity is maintained between the Pre-Prep and the Prep School
  • Monitor the quality of teaching and learning in the Pre-Prep and offer support and guidance to teachers as appropriate.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum and ensure that a sound system of assessment and record keeping is maintained by class teachers
  • Responsibility for the teaching of a year group, displaying a high level of professional ability as an example to new teachers, pupils and others
  • Identify any children with educational or emotional needs and, where necessary, to make provision for them with close liaison with the SENCo.
  • Maintain close links with the Heads of Departments at the Prep School in all subject areas
  • Take appropriate responsibility for the health and safety of pupils, visitors and work colleagues in accordance with the requirements of legislation

Monitoring and reporting behaviour

  • Oversee the Pre-Prep School rewards system (House Points, Star Pupil awards), facilitating opportunities for celebration of pupil successes
  • Maintain high standards of positive behaviour among the pupils and have due regard for their health and safety both on the school premises and when engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere
  • To take overall responsibility for pupil disciplinary procedures and policy, including directing the work of class teachers to investigate and deal with disciplinary cases in all year groups
  • Supporting class teachers in the implementation of individual support structures and target setting

Marketing

  • Contribute and participate in Open Mornings, New Pupils’ Days and other school events as required
  • Oversee Pre-Prep intranet and website pages, and maintain Pre-Prep presence on social media, contributing regularly to school Twitter and Instagram accounts
  • Organise various promotional events to help increase uptake of places
  • Be the ‘public face’ of the Pre-Prep and deal with parental concerns in appropriate cases
  • Give tours of the school to prospective parents
  • Ensure that the Pre-Prep sections of the school website are both vibrant and up to date
  • Write regular newsletters to parents
  • To ensure a wide range of activities for pupils
  • Attend events outside of normal school hours, such as School concerts, Parents Evenings etc
  • Ensure all staff are trained and confident in safeguarding children effectively

Runnymede College was founded by Arthur F Powell and his wife Julia in 1967, in a small house in Calle José Rodríguez Pinilla. 1. Purpose of the role: The Prep School Head of Science will be responsible for leading a vibrant and dynamic Science curriculum within the Prep School, working to ensure the highest standards of teaching, learning and academic attainment. They will work closely with the Academic Deputy Head, Senior Science Head of Department and Science teachers in the Prep and Pre-Prep School. They will facilitate the transition to the school’s new structure and ensure effective development and delivery of the Science academic curriculum.

2. Main responsibilities:

i.) Strategic direction

• Be responsible for the yearly overview of Science from years 1-8 and ensure it is taught to a high standard by staff

• Advise the Deputy Head on the school’s future strategy for Science provisions to ensure the curriculum combines the best of tradition and innovative methods.

• To support the Headmaster and Deputy Head of Academic in Science teacher recruitment for both academic and co-curricula roles

• To liaise with the leaders of Science in the Senior School facilitate the transition of Year 7 & 8 into the Prep School, and to continue the collaboration to ensure Scientific skills are developed effectively throughout the whole school

• To work with form teachers to ensure cross-curricular links are being made using Science

• To collaborate with any colleagues in ensuring progression and continuity across year groups

• To write an action plan as part of the School Development Plan and evaluate the effectiveness of the plan on a termly basis

ii.) Leadership & Management

• To lead and co-ordinate the Science department in a professional, positive and pro-active manner and to encourage cooperation between them

• To work with the Deputy Head (Timetable) to plan faculty staffing allocations, timetables and rooming

• To make appropriate arrangements for classes when staff are absent, liaising with relevant staff to secure appropriate cover

• To assist with the induction of new staff in the faculty

• To participate in Head of Department meetings

• To be involved in teaching and learning observations with other members of staff to raise pupils’ standards of achievement and to evaluate practice

• To assist Senior members of staff in the monitoring and evaluation of the quality of teaching and learning within Science throughout the school through teaching and learning observations, team teaching and work scrutiny

• To advise and inform NQTs and other news staff about the subject policy and practice in the school

• To lead staff development sessions for teaching and support staff as agreed with the Headteacher

iii.) Curriculum development

• Oversee the Science department in the preparation and development of their courses of study, teaching materials, schemes of work, methods of teaching and assessment.

• To take responsibility for Years 1-7 Science curricula (and Year 8’s in 2024).

• Ensure that schemes of work in Science are inspiring, challenging, effective and reflect continuity across all Key Stages

• Ensure good practice is shared throughout the school

• To provide an example of ‘excellence’ as a leading classroom practitioner, inspiring and motivating other staff

• To observe and review the quality of teaching in the faculty

• To encourage the development of co-curricula activities and trips/visits which support the learning and experience of students at Runnymede

• To provide and support the development of up to date learning resources for students and staff

• To account to the Deputy Head Academic and Headmaster for the efficiency and effectiveness of their subject area within the school

iv). Tracking & Monitoring

• To work with Form Teachers, Heads of Year, Science teachers & SENCOs to implement appropriate intervention strategies to support pupil progress

• Ensure that within the faculty, individual pupil progress is regularly assessed, recorded and reported and used to inform future teaching

• To oversee behaviour management within the faculty and support in ensuring a safe, secure and structured learning environment

A number of our students will be staying in Spain, at top-notch places including ICADE, IE and Navarra; others will continue their education elsewhere in Europe in world-leading institutions such as Sciences Po in France, ETH in Zurich, and several excellent universities in The Netherlands, including Eindhoven and Rotterdam.

The school is looking to recruit an outstanding Pre Prep School teacher to join us in September 2024.

You should be enthusiastic and have high expectations of all pupils. You would be joining a committed team of teachers with high standards who want to continue to develop the quality of learning and teaching. Our children are bilingual, positive and eager to learn. Any candidate should be willing to play an active role in the co-curricular life of the school.

The successful applicant will have:

  • outstanding GCSE & A level results
  • a good honours degree from a British University (2:1 or better)
  • a PGCE or other qualified teacher status for Primary
  • recent experience as a teacher in a school in the UK
  • have experience of teaching the EYFS/KS1 curriculum
  • excellent leadership and teamwork skills and be willing to collaborate on planning and resourcing, developing and sharing schemes of work and resources
  • be committed to providing stimulating and well-structured learning across all areas of the curriculum
  • be motivated and use initiative to contribute to success of the department and school
  • the ability to modify learning strategies to target the needs of individual students
  • high expectations of pupils’ effort and behaviour, and facilitate this with proven classroom management skills
  • be organised and able to prioritise to meet deadlines
  • be highly motivated
  • have a passion for education
  • be an excellent classroom practitioner
  • be confident in teaching early Mathematics with a mastery approach
  • have secure knowledge of of teaching Phonics and Early Reading
  • to be confident in using technology effectively in teaching and learning

Other preferable but not essential criteria:

  • Previous experience of an international school
