Runnymede College is justly renowned for its superb teaching of Science. The staff who deliver exciting, challenging lessons in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are all experienced teachers who love their subjects, and they take full advantage of our excellent laboratory facilities to bring the world of science to life for all year groups. After gaining a solid grounding in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in Key Stage 3, the three sciences are all highly popular options for IGCSE and A-level. Subsequently, many students go on to study degrees as diverse as Medicine, Biochemistry, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering at top universities in the UK, USA, Spain and elsewhere in the EU – including Oxford, Stanford, Columbia and Imperial College London.
We are also proud of the way our students are enriched and extended through co-curricular and super-curricular opportunities. Not only is there a dedicated Science Club for younger students, but those wishing to pursue future work and study in the medical sphere are also treated to visiting speakers and presentations at the Medical Club. Our pupils also participate in the internationally recognised British Physics Olympiad qualifications, with some of our best and brightest achieving coveted Gold Awards in these competitions. Students have also taken part in the CERN Beamline for Schools projects, building high-level teamwork skills and developing their scientific curiosity. Stimulating excursions, including to the European Space Agency – ESA Space Agency facilities in Villafranca del Castillo and an Enel Green Power wind farm near Ávila, are key to reinforcing students’ understanding and passion for the sciences. We have also been delighted to welcome world-leading scientists to the school to explain their research to our students, most recently Professor Tribaldos of Universidad Carlos III, who spoke about the future of nuclear energy to our sixth formers.
We hope this video captures just some of the dynamism and enthusiasm which emanates from the Science Faculty at Runnymede College!
