A Levels

Our Sixth Form curriculum allows students to explore any combination of A level subjects and develop transferable skills through additional learning opportunities.Advanced Levels (A Levels) provide students with an ideal balance of breadth and depth, allowing them to explore subjects in detail while developing a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in areas that interest them most. Students have the flexibility to combine a variety of subjects, such as Mathematics with creative or Humanities-based courses, enabling a personalised and well-rounded academic experience.

A Levels are recognised and respected worldwide, ensuring students receive offers from top universities across the UK, USA, Spain, and elsewhere in Europe. These globally recognised qualifications allow students to showcase their academic strengths and unlock opportunities for higher education.

Students typically study three or four A Level subjects, with final examinations taken at the end of Year 13. Throughout the two-year programme, students undergo multiple assessments, including internal exams at the end of Year 12. These exams play a critical role in determining predicted grades for university applications.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Runnymedians take pride in achieving fluency in English. All Sixth Form students prepare for and take the IELTS examination at the end of Year 12. IELTS assesses English language proficiency, a requirement for some university applications. It also serves as an excellent way to maintain and enhance students written and oral English skills throughout their academic journey.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

In addition to A Levels, our Sixth Formers have the option to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), a unique opportunity designed to develop skills beyond the A Level curriculum. The EPQ is equivalent to half an A Level (worth 28 UCAS points). Students are required to plan and conduct independent research, culminating in a written report of around 5,000 words. Alternatively, for practical projects, they create an artefact or production accompanied by a shorter report of at least 1,000 words.

The EPQ allows students to delve deeper into topics of personal interest, whether related to their studies or outside of their chosen subjects. For example, students might explore areas such as Psychology, Philosophy, or Computer Science. The process begins with weekly lessons focused on developing the necessary research and project management skills. Afterward, students work independently with the support of a dedicated EPQ Coordinator and individual specialist supervisors who guide them through the project.

The EPQ is challenging and is recommended for our most organised and motivated students who are eager to explore topics beyond their A Level curriculum. It provides an
invaluable opportunity for intellectual exploration, self-discipline, and academic growth.
